Hello everybody !

My name is Jean-Michel Bartnicki. I was born on the 11th of April 1957 in Valenciennes in northern France. I come from a humble background. I'm an only child and I'm of Polish, German, Russian and Lithuanian origin. Quite a mixture, isn't it? I spent my entire childhood in Escaudain, which is about 20km from Valenciennes. I liked studying, but I especially enjoyed playing sports, particularly tennis, which I was hooked on for years, before a serious health concern forced me to give it up completely. I love my region, which I think is too often given bad press, even though we have our own unique history, which is beautifully recounted, for example, in the best-selling novels of Annie Degroote, which I advise you to read. Also, Lille is increasingly becoming a crossroads of Europe, and is a wonderful city to visit. All that we're missing is the sun, which all too often fails to break through our low clouds, but the people of the North, "les chti'mis", have a very deep sense of human relations and friendship.

After doing classical studies at Denain secondary school, I sat my leaving certificate exam (literary option) in 1976, and then went on to do a two-year course at the teacher training college in Douai. A few years ago, I successfully completed the exam to become a certified primary school teacher. Teaching is truly a vocation, and an exhausting but rewarding profession. I teach children in second year of primary school. You can access numerous educational sites in my pedagogy section.

My passion for writing developed quite late in life and I regret not being musical, which would help me when writing songs. However, I like to think that words come to me like musical notes.

I've been married since 1978 to Annie, who is a nursery school teacher. Annie, who is of Italian origin, also comes from a humble background, and she's experienced all of life's hardships in the mining regions of Masny, near Douai. Her mother, Catherine, has instilled in her a deep sense of moral values. We have an only daughter, Anne, who was born on the 30th of March 1982 and who is currently studying at the Institute of Political Sciences in Paris. We're overjoyed!

This is the first time that I've created a website, and since by only training has been a four-day course, I'd ask you to excuse any flaws. I made the best use I could of my limited knowledge of information technology. I wanted the site to be easily navigable and as user-friendly as possible. You can make your own contribution to the site by sending me poems, which I'd be delighted to put in my guest book, provided I like them, of course. At the foot of this page, you can access all the other pages without having to refer back to the contents page.

I have numerous correspondents throughout the world and it's quite extraordinary to be able to communicate with people from the four corners of the globe, whether in French or in English. Some have become true friends to me, and we met each other in Quebec in 1999.

Many thanks to Darragh O'Callaghan (Ireland) for translating this page into English !
